Case Study: Calvert North

Overview

The Calvert area is the location of an important intersection between two new railway networks, which will see HS2 running underneath the East West Rail line.

Whilst EKFB (a joint venture made up of Eiffage, Kier, Ferrovial and BAM Nuttall) is the main works contractor, Buckingham Group Contracting, as was, had been carrying out the earthworks and civil works near the village of Calvert in Buckinghamshire. The ‘Calvert North’ project, valued at £111m, is expected to be completed in May 2026.

Facing The Challenge

Kier Transportation’s acquisition of the Buckingham Group made it necessary to review the document management processes used on this project. This presented an opportunity for the Transportal team to tackle both new and existing challenges:

1. Ensuring Secure Collaboration: The move from Buckingham Group to Kier resulted in a temporary shift from Oracle Aconex to a shared drive for document storage and distribution, limiting efficiency and security. The Transportal CDE provided the workspace and workflows to ensure secure, collaborative, and controlled information exchange.

2. Streamlining Document Distribution: Manual processes for transferring documents from the EKFB project to Calvert North led to inefficiencies and potential errors. Transportal created a bespoke API integration, eliminating manual downloads and uploads and enhancing collaboration and efficiency.

3. Smoothing the Transition from Oracle Aconex: Transferring over 4500 files from Aconex to the Transportal CDE could have taken weeks of work. Transportal devised a user-friendly bulk import function to simplify the transfer process and preserve the historical record of information whilst reducing the time taken to only a few days.

A Seamless Transition

Taking on board regular feedback and making iterative improvements throughout the implementation phase, Transportal has provided the support and technological solutions to enable the Calvert project to transition seamlessly from using Aconex. It has established a streamlined process for receiving, organising, and sharing information, helping to reduce inefficiencies and errors, improving the overall effectiveness of information management, and saving time and resources for project stakeholders.
